A Brief Introduction to Ethiopia
And by brief we mean very brief.
One of the most remarkable things about Ethiopia is that it is the oldest independent country in Africa and, except for a brief Italian rule from October 1935 to May 1936, has never been colonized by a first world country. Ethiopia is just shy of two times the size of Texas and is completely landlocked. In fact, Ethiopia is the most populated landlocked country in the world.
The language in the area we are traveling to is Oromo, however most people are taught English, so language barrier should not be that big of a problem.
The main religion is Christianity, with the second largest religion being Islam.
Ethiopian is near the Sahara desert, and does not get much rain. Because of this Ethiopia is almost always in drought and famine.
Ethiopia is a federal republic which is very similar to what we have in the United States.
Ethiopia has 0.03 physicians for every 1,000 people, which is equal to one physician for every 33,333 people, in comparison, the United States has 2 physicians for every 1,000 people.
39% of Ethiopians are beneath the Global Poverty Line meaning they live on less that $1.25 USD per day.
